BRONTOSCORPIO
The largest scorpion ever to exist, Brontoscorpio anglicus (brawn-toe-score-pee-o an-glee-cuss) was a monster that we thankfully don't live with today.
Brontoscorpio lived underwater during the late Silurian period, 420-415 mya. It coexisted with the false sea scorpions called eurypterids. Some of these eurypterids would have preyed on Brontoscorpio, causing it to evolve a new strategy for survival.
Brontoscorpio possesed primitive lungs, that allowed it to venture onto land for short periods of time. This makes it one of the first animals ever to venture onto land.
Extinction
Towards the end of the Silurian (415 mya), Brontoscorpio went extinct. Why it did is not clear, however, Brontoscorpio's descendants survived, eventually evolving into the scorpions we have today.
