The rise of mammals can be seen as a direct effect of the extinction of the dinosaurs. Since that point in time, mammals have expanded into hundreds of roles in hundreds of ecosystems. Famous extinct mammals include the woolly mammoth and the saber-tooth cat, Smilodon.
