TRILOBITES
Arguably the most famous extinct group of extinct invertebrates, trilobites are also a very ancient group of creatures. Trilobites first appeared in the Cambrian Period, 523 mya, and survived until the end of the Permian Period, 248 mya.
Trilobites would have been bottom feeders, scrounging whatever they could off the sea floor. This possibly would have included the bits of trilobites dropped by larger predators.
EXTINCTION AND IMAGE CREDITS
Like so many other organisms, all the known species trilobites went extinct at the end of the Permian Period, during the extinction event known as The Great Dying. During this extinction event, 90% of all life present on Earth went extinct. Why this extinction event occurred is unknown. Leading up to the event, volcanic activity was much higher than it ever been since the dawn of life. It would appear that this volcanic activity changed the environment to quickly, to fast. This caused a complete loss of niches that animals had been adapted to. Thus, these creatures went extinct, allowing new, bipedal, feathered creatures to evolve.
